A Fine New Blend – Sunrise Coffee and Max Grover Art

(Port Townsend, WA) Sunrise Coffee Company, Ltd., a local roasting company whose cheerful proprietor is a longtime community volunteer, has unveiled a striking new logo developed by artist Max Grover. Grover partnered with Sunrise to create a new logo and brand their popular roasts with his characteristically fun and whimsical paintings in eye-popping colors.

“Our company image was outdated and boring,” says owner and master roaster Sue Ohlson. During a visit to the Max Grover Gallery two years ago, my husband and I saw a wonderful painting that Max had done of a coffee cup. He made this everyday object come alive and we knew instantly that Max’s work captured the style and feel we wanted for Sunrise Coffee.”  The three have since worked together, along with Max’s wife Sherry and local designer Jill Beaumont, to create the logo and product packaging.

Sunrise Coffee Company has been roasting organic and fair trade beans in Port Townsend since 1985.  Custom roasts, which reveal the unique characteristics of coffee from around the world are the company specialty. Handcrafted blends such as Blue Moose and Salal are increasingly popular across the region. Sue Ohlson oversees each and every batch to ensure the high standards that Sunrise Coffee is known for. “The three words that best describe my business are fresh, local and organic,” says Ohlson.

Sunrise Coffee is available in bulk across the Olympic Peninsula; at the Port Townsend Food Coop and QFC, Sunny Farms in Sequim, and J & P Produce in Forks.  Numerous local businesses serve it up by the cup, including Lanza’s, Silverwater, Landfall, Castle Key restaurants, Blue Moose and Salal cafés, Waterfront Pizza, Pizza Factory, Portside Deli, Siren’s Pub, Water Street Brewery, Rose Theatre, Uptown Theatre, Key City Players, Sea Marine, Kinetic Koffee Kompany, Dragonfire Espresso, James House, The Boiler Room, Beachcomber, Centrum, In Season Catering and Alderwood Restaurant (in Sequim).

If you’re not sure you’ve ever had Sunrise Coffee chances are you have at the many community events, auctions and festivals around the area Sunrise donates their coffee to. “I believe in this community and this community has been good to me. I show up with my coffee wherever and whenever I can,” says Ohlson. For the past two years Sunrise has sponsored Jefferson Land Trust’s annual Rain Fest Auction and has donated coffee to the Wooden Boat Festival for years.

Boiler Room Espresso is the new moniker for all company espresso, the artwork for which is a whimsical, steaming contraption that only Max Grover could conjure up. Sunrise Coffee will donate a portion of all proceeds from the sale of this roast to The Boiler Room, a safe, drug and alcohol-free and youth-run coffeehouse in Port Townsend. Custom roasts for the Blue Moose and Salal cafés also exhibit eye-catching new labels featuring Grover’s work.

A total of eight new paintings have resulted from the Sunrise Coffee Company - Max Grover collaboration, and they now grace labels for eight delicious blends. The original artwork will be on display at the Max Grover Gallery on Water Street, Port Townsend Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 5-7, 2009, PT Art Walk Weekend. Signed prints of the new Sunrise Coffee labels, as well as note cards, will be available. Custom roasts will be sold by the bag and Sue Ohlson invites all of her community and friends to stop by on Friday and Saturday 5-8PM and have a cup of coffee with her. Regular gallery hours are 11-5:30. Friday and Saturday reception hours are 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
